Cavtat is located 20 kilometres south of Dubrovnik and lies on the Adriatic Sea. Cavtat was originally built by Greek settlers, later it was also under Roman rule. The current name Cavtat is derived from Civitas Vetus, which means “the old city”, a reference to the old city of Dubrovnik, as the original inhabitants of Cavtat fled to Dubrovnik when Cavtat was sacked. Today, Cavtat is a popular tourist destination with a beautiful harbour and a short distance from the airport.

Cavtat is located in the Konavle countryside. This is a rural area with 32 villages, only 2 villages are located by the sea, these are Cavtat and Monulat. The area is a rolling landscape with many olive groves and vineyards. There are also many old tombstones here of which Stecci the medieval tombstones with decorative motifs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most important sights in Cavtat are the St. Nicholas Church on the Cavtat coast, the house of Vlaho Bukovac, Dubrovnik’s best painter, the Rector’s palace and the Our Lady of the Snow monastery at the end of the boulevard with religious works of art. There are also many remains to be seen from Greek and Roman times, including a theatre, city walls, aqueducts and a nymphaeum.
