What to do in Kaštel Stari?
As mentioned before, Kaštela is situated between the two cities Split and Trogir. Kaštela is a coastal town consisting of 7 small villages. This region is also called the “River of Seven Castles”. Every Kaštela settlement has its own castle by the sea. By the way, they are more like larger houses than castles. The castles used to serve as protection for the cities, but not only for that purpose. It was also meant to protect the fertile ground behind them. That same land is still used for wine growing today. In the Kaštela villages, you will find typical features of the Dalmatian culture: many stone steps, stone balconies, wine cellars and many narrow streets leading to small squares. The Kaštela coastal resorts are a quiet holiday destination, there is no real nightlife but there are plenty of cosy cafes and restaurants. The area also has long pebble beaches. Almost all these beaches are equipped with beach chairs, umbrellas for hire and water sports facilities. The sea is shallow in many places, which makes it perfect for families with young children. In Kaštel Stari you will find a fresh market, and there are also plenty of bakeries, supermarkets, and other shops for your daily needs. In the Kaštel area there are also several wineries, Poolincluded’s tip: try the Zinfandel wine. In Kaštel Stafilic there is an olive tree of about 1500 years old, called Mastrinka. This tree has a trunk width of 6 metres! It is also a protected natural monument in the region. Around the castle of Kaštel Gomilica, Game of Thrones was filmed. For those in the know, this was the film set for the town of Braavos. Split is approximately a 20-minute drive from the Kaštel area, which can also be easily reached by bus. Trogir is also easily accessible by bus.
