Holiday in Rovinj

Sun holidays in Rovinj, Croatia

The peninsula of Rovinj is located in the province of Istria. The city is located on the west coast and has in recent years become very popular among tourists from all over Europe. A fun fact is that about 10% of the city’s population is Italian and officially two different languages are spoken in the city. Bello giusto!

The picturesque and romantic Rovinj has in the course of time grown attached to the mainland and is no longer a separate island. Something that is typical of many towns in Croatia can also be found in this town; the coloured facades and winding streets through the town. The medieval buildings run from the old town to the promenade. An absolute plus is that the centre is car-free, allowing you to stroll through the streets at your leisure. Parking is available at various locations around the city.

What to do in Rovinj?

The highlight of the town is the monument St. Euphemia Church. You can see the church quite easily because it towers above the town. The church is dedicated to a girl called “Saint Euphemia”. The story behind this dedication is very touching. At the age of fifteen, Euphemia was arrested because she refused to give up Christianity. She was eventually killed by lions, but not devoured. Because this is quite exceptional, Euphemia was canonised and a statue of her was placed at the top of the 61-metre tower. A steep staircase allows you to admire the statue and the beautiful view of the town of Rovinj.

Apart from visiting the beautiful church and strolling through the old streets, there are many more nice trips that you can make in Rovinj. From a boat trip to the uninhabited island of Red (Crveni Otok), a day trip to Pula or diving to the wreck of the Baron Gautsch.

Culinary journey through Rovinj

As described about Istria, the region is known for its delicious olive oil and world-famous truffles. It is a paradise for lovers of good and fresh food and drink. If you are in Rovinj in the spring, we recommend you try the fresh asparagus that you can literally get on every street corner.

Near the harbour, you will find the best and most pleasant restaurants where you can have a romantic dinner or a drink. Wine lovers will find their happiness in Rovinj and can enjoy a delicious wine in one of the many wine houses.  And don’t forget to end the day on the promenade with a delicious ice cream from Gelateria Italia!

The weather in Rovinj

Istria has a sea climate with many hours of sunshine, which makes it an ideal holiday destination. In general, it is slightly cooler here than in the southern Dalmatia, due to the different winds that bring refreshment from the sea. Rainfall makes the peninsula one of the greenest places in Croatia. From April to November, the temperatures are on average between 15 and 24 °C. In these months, it is ideal to visit the town of Rovinj.
