What to do in Umag?

One of the best things to do, as in many Croatian towns, is to visit the old town centre. Its history goes back to ancient times and was discovered by the Romans. Remnants of the original city walls and towers can be admired on a walk through the enchanting old town.

The main square in Umag is one of the most beautiful places in the city centre. The romantic streets and alleys surrounding the square form a labyrinth of cosy restaurants, wine bars and unique shops. You can go for a short walk during the day, but an hour of sailing or diving is also recommended. In addition, you can cycle, mountain bike, play tennis and golf during your holiday in Umag.

Would you like to spend a day outside the city? Then we recommend a visit to the famous Savudrija lighthouse 9 km from the city centre. The building was built about 200 years ago by the architect Pietro Nobile and is made of white stones from the coast. From the almost 36-metre-high tower, you have a wonderful view of a promontory whose wild and romantic gossamer beach is perfect for a few relaxing hours of swimming in the sea.

Culinary trip through Umag

Beyond the port of Umag and on the promenade there are several traditional konobas (taverns) for the freshest fish and grill dishes, delicious pizzas and local wine. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner complete with sunset. The cuisine in the Istrian region is a mix of continental and Mediterranean dishes. Istria is best known for its fantastic olive oil, which is among the best in the world. In total, there are more than one and a half million olive trees in the whole province, and a bottle of olive oil is more than worth it!

The weather in Umag

Istria has a sea climate with many hours of sunshine, which makes it an ideal holiday destination. In general, it is a bit cooler here than in the southern Dalmatia, due to the different winds that bring refreshment from the sea. Rainfall makes the peninsula one of the greenest places in Croatia. From about May to October, the temperatures are perfect for swimming in the Adriatic.
