Sun holidays in Germany

Germany is a particularly versatile country and has much to offer. The beautiful landscape and untouched nature are perfect for both long and short holidays. The hilly countryside, the heaths, the beautiful valleys and the rugged mountains are perfect for various walking and cycling holidays. In the south of Germany, in Bayern, you can admire one of the most photographed sights; Neuschwanstein Castle. In the wonderful and atmospheric cities, such as Hamburg, Düsseldorf and of course Berlin, you can still taste the ancient culture. For example, see the last remains of the Berlin Wall or visit the memorial. In the city of Cologne, you will find the largest cathedral in Germany and you can enjoy the ‘gothic’ architectural style. Germany is even known for its great wines, so for a wine holiday Germany is also the place to be.

What to do in Germany?

There is plenty to do in Germany. It is the country where fairy tales seem to come alive, a country full of cities steeped in romance and history. Experience the contrast between beautiful lakes, colourful meadows and steep mountain peaks.

You may not think of white beaches, azure seas and magnificent cliffs when you think of Germany. Yet you will find them there, namely on Rügen. Rügen is the largest island in Germany. This pearl in the Baltic Sea is surrounded by 60 kilometres of sandy beaches. The most beautiful area on the island is found in the Jasmund nature park. You can enjoy the view of the Baltic Sea from an ancient beech forest. Enjoy the play of colours that can be seen on the white chalk cliffs, because this can change by the position of the sun.

In Southern Germany, you will find the sunniest Alpine region of the country: Bad Hindelang. Vast green meadows and valleys with picturesque villages. In the background, the mighty mountains and the sound of tinkling cowbells. Popular for winter sports enthusiasts but – also thanks to the 300 kilometres of signposted walking paths – a wonderful place to enjoy unspoilt German nature all year round. Partly due to the unspoilt nature and clean air, this region is also known as ‘Heilklimatischer Kurort’, a natural resort with healing powers!

Cologne has one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, Cologne Cathedral. When its construction was completed in 1880, it was even the tallest building in the world! At 157 metres, the towers rise like giants above the city. Would you like to visit this cathedral and enjoy a wonderful view? Then you can first walk up 509 steps. Be sure to take a look at the Sankt-Petersglocke, one of the largest bells in the world.

Looking for more beautiful buildings to take pictures of? Then take a look at Neuschwanstein Castle. This castle was the great inspiration for Walt Disney for his own castle in the theme park. This castle was built by order of King Louis II, who was also a fan of fairy tales himself! The castle stands on a 925 metre high rock and is located almost on the Austrian border. This beautiful castle is really worth a picture!

A culinary journey through Germany

In fact, Germany today has an inexhaustible number of gastronomic highlights: from delicious regional specialities to Michelin-starred restaurants, and then some delicious wines. Germany has around three hundred starred and gourmet restaurants. You will also find typical German restaurants everywhere, which creatively transform traditional dishes into original culinary dishes. The special cultural landscapes of the German regions are closely linked to the culinary specialities. Think of the vine-covered slopes above the romantic river valleys of the Moselle and the Rhine, the species-rich meadows of Schleswig-Holstein that produce excellent meat and a wide variety of cheeses, and the orchardy meadows on the hills of the German low mountain range. Germany scores high in terms of both the diversity of its restaurants and their distribution. Excellent restaurants can be found in all parts of the country: in metropolises, smaller towns and in the countryside.

The weather in Germany

Germany has a temperate maritime climate. This means that the country has relatively mild winters and that, in some places, the summers do not have extreme temperatures. In the east and south of the country, the climate is more continental than the rest of Germany, which means that summers can be hot and dry. In addition, you can experience precipitation throughout the year. The various mountain and hill regions can cause considerable variation in the weather. Climate information is no guarantee of what is to come. Always check the possible weather conditions within a certain period.
